The
NHSM has purchased a 9,000 square foot building with a 60-car parking
lot on almost an acre of land for the future home of "The Maryland Naturalist
Center". The property is located at 6908 Belair Road, just one mile inside
of the Baltimore Beltway in Baltimore County and just 100 yards from the
city line. After renovations, the site will be used for collections conservation,
building a community of naturalists through the consortium, and offering
educational outreach. Programs will start at the Naturalist Center and
extend into communities to allow people to experience nature in their
own backyards. Learn More
The history of The Natural History Society of Maryland starts long before
its incorporation in 1929. Founded by members of the Maryland Academy
of Science, many of our older collections were collected by members of
the Academy in the 1800's. For decades we ran a natural history museum
in the Baltimore Zoo's Maryland House. Since its closure in the mid-1970's
the items on display as well as thousands of scientific specimens have
been stored in our office in Charles Village. Learn what we've been doing
recently, and about our plan to develop a permanent, comprehensive natural
history museum in the State of Maryland. Learn More
