PeopleA building consists of bricks and the mortar that holds them together. An organization consists of people and the common cause that brings them together. Here are just a few of the people who have made a significant difference at the Natural History Society of Maryland and in the study of natural history in the State of Maryland. Edmund B. Fladung: Founder of the NHSM Fladung AwardEdmund B. Fladung was a founder and the first president of the Natural History Society of Maryland. As founded, the Society has as its purpose "to increase and diffuse knowledge of Natural History, and to that end establish and maintain in the State of Maryland a museum and a reference library, to collect and preserve objects of Natural History, to protect wildlife from needless destruction, to provide facilities for research and publication, and for the pursuance of allied sciences and endeavor, and to offer popular instruction." In 1993, the NHSM established the Edmund B. Fladung Award to recognize persons, living or deceased, who have exemplified the spirit of the founding purpose of the Society. Past Recipients The Edmund B. Fladung award has been presented to the following individuals.
