Join NHSM for an exploratory paddle through the wild waterways of Black Marsh Natural Area, one of the northern Chesapeake Bay’s most remarkable tidal wetlands. Despite its proximity to Baltimore’s industrial and suburban landscape, Black Marsh remains a surprisingly secluded place where marsh, forest, and open water come together to support a rich diversity of wildlife.
We will be guided by Thayer Young, a longtime NHSM member who specializes in creating maps and geographic databases for small nonprofits. Below is a unique map of Black Marsh Natural Area that Thayer created to help us explore this remarkable landscape.
Our exploration will begin with a 0.75-mile hike to the shoreline, followed by a 0.5-mile paddle from the beach to the inlet to explore this unique brackish ecosystem. While on the water, we’ll discuss the marsh’s ecological significance, the challenges posed by invasive Phragmites, and the important role these wetlands play in supporting wildlife. We’ll also keep an eye out for the striking crimson-eyed rosemallow blooming in the upper marsh.
We’ll also explore the human history of North Point, from the Battle of North Point during the War of 1812 to the heyday of Bay Shore Amusement Park, when Baltimore residents traveled by trolley to enjoy these shores.
Whether you’re drawn by history, ecology, or simply the opportunity to explore a hidden corner of the Chesapeake, this paddle offers a unique perspective on what could be a familiar place.
This paddle takes place on the very exposed coast and will switch to a hike if wind conditions are beyond calm. Intermediate paddling experience is required.
Our canoes seat 2 adults, so individuals will be paired up with another paddler. If you are not comfortable paddling with a stranger, sign up with a buddy!
