Summer Naturalist Intern

  • Do the animals in the museum really come to life after dark?
  • How heavy is a jar of snakes?
  • What is the difference between mastodon and woolly mammoth teeth?
  • Where are the bathrooms?
  • Why do shark vertebrae look like tree rings?
  • When did megalodons swim in Maryland waters?

These are just some of the questions you will get to answer as the 2024 NHSM Summer Naturalist Intern. During the 10-week period, you’ll gain experience in natural history, collections, museum curation, environmental education, retail sales, and marketing. The intern will have the opportunity to take the lead on developing community outreach programs, work in the gift shop, interact with the public at the museum and in the field, and contribute to the diverse array of tasks involved with running a small non-profit museum.

A successful candidate will:

  • Show enthusiasm for teaching and learning about the natural world.
  • Have experience working with the public.
  • Be both self-directed and a team player.
  • Have strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Be interested in pursuing a career in environmental education, natural history interpretation, museum sciences, or a related field.
  • Be creative, curious and courteous.

15 hours a week. Must be able to be at the museum during regular public open hours (Wednesdays from 2-6, Thursdays from 10-2, and the first Sunday of every month from 10-2). In addition, the intern must be available to work the Market Open House days (TBD), as well as Shark Fest on July 14. Other program dates will also be scheduled in coordination with the intern’s schedule.

Start June 1, 2024 – End August 9, 2024

Compensation: Stipend $1,000

Benefits: Interns are able to attend classes, workshops and field trips for free, as long as they do not conflict with work responsibilities. Intern will receive a complimentary Family Membership for the year, good for a total of 5 people.
