Celebrate National Catfish Day! Maryland is often called the “United States in miniature” and we have a variety of catfish species that demonstrates this as well. Join us for a lecture that will look at the various habitats that these versatile fish prefer, the problems that can result from stocking nonnative fish and the challenges that managers face when dealing with a species that is both loved and reviled. We will cover native species and those that have been introduced. Presented by Mary and Tim Groves, fisheries biologists with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Fishing and Boating Services.
“Catfish Species in Maryland: A Snapshot of the Last 120 Years” is being presented in honor of Water/Ways, the newest traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street program.TheHistorical Society of Baltimore County (HSBC) is the first of six Maryland sites to hostWater/Ways and the Natural History Society of Maryland is joining HSBC and many local organizations and businesses to promote water-themed programming from May 25, 2019 to July 6, 2019 to raise people’s understanding of what water means to our community. Water/Ways is part of Museum on Main Street, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and the Maryland Humanities Council, and was adapted from an exhibition organized by the American Museum of Natural History, New York.

The Natural History Society of Maryland is a volunteer-led non-profit organization, so the fee you pay will go directly to support the programs, the nature collections, and the building that make this kind of nature education possible.
