Canoe Trips

Join NHSM and Howdy Kipp for a leisurely paddle along the Gunpowder River and its marshes as we search for some of Maryland’s native turtle species. We’ll drift along sunny riverbanks and navigate fallen logs with hopes of spotting amazing reptiles and other wildlife about. Bring binoculars to enhance your view and enjoy a peaceful morning on the water.

Our expert guide, Howdy Knipp, is a retired middle school science teacher and has been involved with the Lake Roland Nature Council since its inception in 2010 and has helped with canoe programs, hikes, and many park projects over the past 15 years.

Our canoes seat two adults, so individuals will be paired with another paddler. If you’re not comfortable paddling with a stranger, sign up with a buddy. You’re also welcome to bring your own boat if you prefer.

This paddle takes place on a tidal river that can be subject to windy conditions, but it is designed as a beginner-friendly experience.

In the case weather is too severe to paddle; the outing will be cancelled.
