Bird Watching Field Experiences Hiking Insects

Join us for an early-morning hike with naturalists Lisa Shannon and Rob Hilton, where we’ll be on the lookout for birds, dragonflies, damselflies, and other flora and fauna that catch our eye.

The morning begins at the Visitor Center’s pollinator garden, where we practice our I Spy skills on butterflies and other insects before heading out toward Goose Pond. From there, the group will hike the Cash Lake Loop, a 1.5 to 1.8-mile trail featuring dirt and gravel paths, gently rolling hills, and a floating boardwalk that crosses a portion of the lake.

Keep an eye out for feathered residents and migrants like scarlet and summer tanagers, Baltimore orioles, various flycatchers, wood ducks, early-fall warblers, and swallows. Aerial hunters will include migrant dragonflies such as black saddlebags, common green darners, and wandering gliders, along with skimmers like blue dashers, slaty skimmers, and widow skimmers, plus delicate damselflies like the fragile forktail.

Bring your close-focus binoculars for insects, if you have them. And your binoculars for distance, too.
Our leaders, Lisa Shannon and Rob Hilton, bring a rich hands-on background in field biology, environmental education, and regional conservation. Lisa will share her extensive knowledge of regional wetland ecology, focusing specifically on the identification, behavior, and life histories of local odonates (dragonflies and damselflies) as well as regional bird species. Rob specializes in guiding excursions covering regional flora and fauna across Mid-Atlantic habitats. Both co-lead specialized field surveys, walks, and nature programs with Nature Forward at Woodend Sanctuary in Chevy Chase and other spots across Maryland.
