Start the new year off right: outdoors for a wintery hike with naturalist Kerry Wixted. We’ll be on the lookout for winter birds and mammal signs and practicing our winter botany skills along the way.
We will start hiking in a slightly hilly area filled with beech trees, then wind down to the former Annapolis reservoir. Our group will be small with a leisurely pace for three or four miles, and will be full of shared observations.
Kerry Wixted is a Maryland naturalist with over 15 years of experience studying the flora and fauna of Maryland. Kerry connects nature to community through her outreach program, kerrysnature.org. She also works currently as a vegetation ecologist at the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, and has worked in many areas for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, including Project WILD, and as a program manager at the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies. Kerry holds a B.S. degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Management from Frostburg State University and an M.S. degree in Biology from West Virginia University. - Family-friendly event with a minimum age of 10 years and older.
- Our meeting location can be found in your registration confirmation email when payment is complete.
- Watch for additional details in a welcome email a few days before the date.
- Dress appropriately for the weather, and consider hand warmers, tea, etc, to keep yourself comfortable.
- Wear sturdy closed-toe hiking or athletic shoes with non-slip soles that can safely handle slippery surfaces.
- Bring water and a hearty snack.
- Bring binoculars and a hand lens or loupe, if you have them.
- Bring your guidebooks, if you have them.
- Bring a first aid kit for your personal use.
- No pets, please.
All events are held rain or shine. If any event is cancelled due to severe weather, you will receive an email or text. If you do not receive a weather-related email, the trip will proceed as planned.
NEW Payment and Cancellation Policy: Payment is due online at the time of registration. Cancellations made 14 or more days in advance of the event will receive a refund minus a 5% processing fee. Cancellations made within 14 days of the event will not receive a refund. Events and field trips with fees of $25 or less are non-refundable at any time unless canceled by NHSM. NHSM retains the right to update or change these requirements at any time.
