Science You Can Eat: Blue Crabs

Sitting down to a plate of steamed blue crabs is a Maryland tradition. Finally being able to pick your own crabs is a right of passage that kids both desire and dread. Most of the time when we consume meat, what is on the plate bears little to no resemblance of the animal from whence it came. Not so with the crab. Taking apart a crab is perhaps the most intimate dining ritual there is. Join Master Naturalist, Lisa Jones, as we take a closer look at the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, is the state crustacean of Maryland. Lisa will go over the external and internal parts of the blue crab. You can follow along with her with your own crab – or just watch from a safe and clean distance.
